Veterans’ Pension Benefit

 

There is a benefit that very few people are aware of, which helps pay for nursing home or assisted living care for war veterans and their widows.

Qualifications:

 

In order to apply for this benefit, all of the following must be met:

  1. Must be honorably discharged.
  2. Must have served a minimum of 90 days on active duty.
  3. At least one of these days must have been during a period of war.
  4. Must be over 65 years of age OR be totally and permanently disabled.

Qualifying periods of war:

 

  1. World War II—December 7, 1941-December 31, 1946, inclusive. If the veteran was in service on December 31, 1946, continuous service before July 26, 1947 is considered to be the World War II period.
  2. The Korean War—June 27, 1950-January 31, 1955, inclusive.
  3. The Vietnam War—February 28, 1961-May 7, 1975, inclusive, for veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam. For all others, August 5, 1964-May 7, 1975, inclusive.
  4. Persian Gulf War—August 2, 1990-present.
